I don't know if it should just be a downgrade or a separately scored thing,
but I lean toward separately scored. I just don't want it. Other people
(heavy smokers) could care less and should be comfortable with pristine but
smoky stuff (instead of shying away because the score suggests it's less
than pristine, which is what would happen if it was just a downcheck)

Well, with all of that in mind and because it is an obviously good point, I
added a "Notes" section to my sample item description and a special note
following the section on the relationship between tobacco smoke defects and
resale value.

I see it as a separate issue from the grading standard proper because
although some of us are bothered by smoke defects, and I include myself in
this group, others may not care at all. And if the set packaging, booklet,
and bricks are not obviously yellowed from tobacco resin -- the only defect
is smell which does not effect the utility of the items in question -- so
this is more of an aesthetic preference not specifically related to
functionality. It's a tough call.  Individual bricks can often be washed or
rinsed and the smell goes away -- but that is more work on the part of the
buyer to make an item usable to him or her.  Seller's may get a price boost
from being to declare that the item is sold from a non-smoker's household.

As in all things concerning a grading standard, honesty in item description
is the desired result.
