The Doctor What <docwhat@gerf.org> wrote in article

I am very dissapointed with this site.  Your problem is just one of them;
you don't have java/javascript enabled in your browser.  Of course, if • you
have WebTV, it doesn't *have* java.

It makes *no* allowance for people with disabilities, it requires lots of
bandwidth, it requires the annoying flash plugin (which I don't want to
use!).

Basically, it's saying *screw you* to every child and adult that doesn't
have the latest copy of WindowsXX with all the patches and isn't
handicapped in someway!

What a load of crap.  I am *sorely* disappointed in this move.

This is why... unless you are going to provide multiple versions of your
site (one for new browsers, one for old) you should ALWAYS design to the
lowest common denominator.  It's just plain rude not to.  No, I really
don't want to start a war about upgrading browsers, and how it's my fault
that I still use IE 3.02.  I don't want to upgrade my browser as my current
one runs slow enough on my old P150.  And I don't think I should have to in
order to enjoy a site run by a toy company!  Does LEGO not realize that
many parents have converted over older 486 (and older) machines for the
kids to use when they're on the net?  I know many people who've bought
themselves the newer hardware and let the kids enjoy a machine they don't
have to worry about wreaking.

On designing websites:

I watch the stats on my website and I know that not all us LEGO fans out
there are using 4.x generation browsers and above.  There are still a few
folks like me who use a 3.x browser, running 640x480 resolution.  I design
my site for us.  Oddly, it's still nicely compatible with newer browsers
and higher resolutions.  No, I'm not a web designer in real life, I just
play one on the Internet.  But I feel a certain responsibility to make sure
that anyone using a reasonable facsimile of a browser can visit and enjoy
my site.

So my advice to LEGO is this:

Know your audience. And if you don't know, don't assume.

To those of you forced to listen to my rant directed towards the LEGO
corporation, my apologies.  To LEGO.... please give me some sort of site I
can use, as I'm still hopelessly addicted to your product, whether either
of us likes it or not.

Best regards to all,
Allan

(...) Greatest common denominator, probably. (You want to design for the highest level that people will have in common. "Lowest common denominator" is meaningless.) (25 years ago, 16-Oct-99, to lugnet.general)
