I think you answered your own question, didn't you? :)
After all, the only thing a kid needs to survive, besides LEGO bricks is
love (1)..... and you can't give them too much of that.

In all seriousness.... I was a kid who spent many a full Saturday or Sunday
hidden away in the basement building with LEGO. And to reiterate what
you've suggested above, I don't think it did me any harm. I'm socially
well-adjusted, have a good job and never once went to jail for spending too
much time building with LEGO.

(1) Of course some people find that kids also do well with food and
water... but really.... aren't LEGO bricks enough for most growing minds? :)

I have set up my son with a bunch of lego probably 1000 (...) (22 years ago, 24-Sep-02, to lugnet.general)
