I had my collection all neatly organized (an Excel spreadsheet) with the sets I
bought (since 1974 - about 1600), how many pieces each set has (average 170 to
180 per set), how many copies of each (I average 2 each, although in my early
days it was strictly 1 of each - all I could afford), and how much I paid for
each one (average $20). This brought me to the total of about 275,000 pcs. at
the middle of 1999.
Then I found e_Bay :-).
Since then I've picked up a collection from California I haven't had time to
sort or catalog (approx 120,000 pcs/ 200 sets), several small sets with
specialized pieces - where my major focus is - trying for the elusive ones...
and have added a girlfreind who loves the Star Wars and Mindstorms stuff. My
estimate is now in the range of 500,000 pcs - with about 2600 different
elements - not to mention colors - I have about 50 different colors found
within various sets.
For a long time, I was keeping the collection - as it grew up - in the second
bedroom of my apartments - gotta tell you what fun it has been to move :-(. Now
I live in a house with a basement - that has two bedrooms down there and,
still, I have new sets in the living room and computer room.
Like others on this thread, I spend a lot of time sorting, acquiring, dreaming
and so on, and yeah, once in a while, I build. Currently am trying the "Minifig
Scale Capital Ship Challenge" (look for "largest MOC") with an idea which will
be about 10 feet long if ever completed. I've got the central corridor nearly
done with only the bridge, crew quarters and engineering sections to do before
attacking the interchangeable modules which are 48 studs long, 36 studs wide
and 5 decks tall.
I don't like thinking about how much I spend on LEGO - not just the purchases
of the sets, but the storage bins, buckets, shelves and extra rent, the
insurance, the time - building, sorting, to shop for the best prices, etc. But,
I wouldn't trade it for anything. I see LEGO as the most versatile (recyclable)
modeling tool on the planet - and have loved watching it grow.
My freinds all know me as an original LEGO Maniac, and I just tell them
"I can't help growing old - but I refuse to grow up."

| Hello, Today, with nothing better to do, I copied all my set purchases from a chart of graph paper into Microsoft Pocket Excell on my HP 32O LX (WindowsCE). I did a quick column sum for parts number and cost and came up with the following: Total (...) (25 years ago, 2-Jan-00, to lugnet.general)
