The basic issue I'm raising is determining the engineer's standard for the
"horizontal spacing" from one stud to the next. I think this is what you're
calling "the pitch". The most commonly quoted dimension standard among LEGO
users is this "horizontal" unit, and the second most common one is the
"vertical" unit, the "height" per brick when a bunch of bricks are stacked.

The size of a brick concerns me less, because it has little to no impact on the
overall size of a large construction made out of many bricks. LEGO makes the
bricks a tiny bit smaller than an integer multiple of the stud spacing in order
to make them fit better. Thus, for example, a 2x12 brick is not 3 times the
length of a 2x4 brick. I'm concerned with the overall length of a
(hypothetical) 10,000-stud-long wall built from 19,999 2x12 bricks and 2 2x6
bricks.

There is already a consensus that the ratio of the "vertical" to "horizontal"
unit dimensions is 6 to 5 (and that this 6 is further divided into 3 times the
"plate thickness" of 2). Since the "vertical" measurement is subject to error
in precise positioning when stacking, the "horizontal" unit is much easier to
measure accurately.

This unit seems to be about 8 millimeters or 5/16 inches, thus the title of the
message.
