Halfway within the realm of possibility: this would be a pretty good
TLG sponsored contest/prize. Design the best new piece and they'll
make it for you.
Contest submissions could include a written description of the piece
and why it would be useful, drawings, pictures of models that need
the piece with the piece missing, whatever. If the designers say
they could use it, and the engineers say they can make it, and the
lawyers say nobody else has a patent on it, then it's eligible.
Two possible outcomes: somebody comes up with something good enough
to justify the production costs, or not. If nobody comes up with
anything good, it's still a virtual certainty that someone will ask
for an existing piece in a previously unavailable color, which gives
TLG an easy (and cheap) cop out.
The discussion has already covered several ideas, including pieces
to change direction and gender. Just in case someone at TLG is really
reading this, here's a few cents worth of additional suggestions:
Large flanged spoked train wheels. I made myself a set of these
out of castle/WW style wagon wheels (smaller wheel rides on the track,
larger wheel is the flange) but they're a little wobbly, and I felt
awful doing the cutting and pasting.
Roadbed pieces for train track, to attach curves securely to
baseplates.
Sliding boxcar doors (do these exist already?).
A distance sensor/sonar for Mindstorms. (I used to have one of
these in an old Heathkit robot, very cool).
Rounded corner pieces (analogous to corner slopes). There are
rounded vertical edges and rounded horizontal edges, but nothing in
the corner (AFAIK).
Taller and shorter minifigs. One plate thickness each way would
probably be sufficient.
1x1 brick with 4 side studs in white. This is my personal holy grail.
If anyone can tell me where to find one you'll be my new best friend.
Wizard hats in grey, white, red, brown, orange (and one with "Wizzard"
written on it).
