Actually, because the side-stud brick has a hole in the stud, you could

Can you expand on that a bit? Do you mean by turning the beam sideways??

Th enumber of ways you can attach LEGO pieces amazes me too.  They can't
possibly have thought of all the combinations when they originally
designed the parts - how did they do it???

This is a fascinating topic in its own right. I feel that some wise
fundamental decisions early on (actually not even TLG decisions, unless
there was a dimension change when TLG acquired the patents from the UK
firm that first developed the basic brick), and some decisions about how
to size new parts as they were developed, have paid off in a big way.

Some of them include:
- the distance from the edge of one stud to the edge of the next is the
same as the plate height (1/3 of a brick)
- The mystical 5:6 ratio
- rod system things are the same diameter as the hole through studs with
holes, which is also the same as a plate. This key thing enables such
things as the entire clip system and all its variants. As a side
benefit, the rods on the bottom of 1x tiles, plates, and bricks are rod
system thickness

But we have to collect sets which cost 20 cents a piece to build up our
collections, but unlike you now, we have no money.

Well, there's always AucZILLA, and the value of a good education. I got
to where I am by paying attention in school and reading a lot. And
hacking around with stuff.

  Why 5 to 6?

Why is the 5-to-6 ratio supposed to be such a great thing? I still think that a 5-to-5 or 6-to-6 ratio (better known as 1-to-1) would have been much better. It would, for example, make it much easier to build things at right angles to other things (...) (25 years ago, 29-Jul-99, to lugnet.general)
