Not in just two studs. If you use two technic bricks separated by 2
plates you do it, but in three instead of two. Everybody knows that
one, of course. But the one you just pointed out is so VERY cool. Of • course
for best effect you need to use a technic 1x1 or a 1x2 with two holes,
or else you're off half a stud horizontally. That can be useful but
not usually.

Actually, because the side-stud brick has a hole in the stud, you could
center it under a hole on another size technic beam, but it would leave
1/2 brick gaps in your construction somewhere...

it's a lot of fun to play with a bunch of these together, especially
because the recess is exactly the same depth as the thickness of the
bit underneath the recess.

Yes. This is a most wicked cool artifact of the decision to make the
fundamental ratio 5:6.
Thank goodness that whoever first designed this piece thought about
it. They could as well have just made a brick with a stud on the side.
When I first rediscovered LEGO (1)

Th enumber of ways you can attach LEGO pieces amazes me too.  They can't
possibly have thought of all the combinations when they originally
designed the parts - how did they do it???

I used to think indenting was a big mistake. I know better now.

...although it would be nice to have a non-indented version every once in
a while without having to use a technic half-pin piece (which rotates,
especially when you don't want it to.)

1 - remember, back in 1971-2, this piece wasn't around much... you
youngsters have it good. :-)

But we have to collect sets which cost 20 cents a piece to build up our
collections, but unlike you now, we have no money.

(...) Can you expand on that a bit? Do you mean by turning the beam sideways?? (...) This is a fascinating topic in its own right. I feel that some wise fundamental decisions early on (actually not even TLG decisions, unless there was a dimension (...) (26 years ago, 11-Jan-99, to lugnet.build)

(...) Well, there is the 1x1 brick with 4 side studs. But at times, it would be better to not have the excess studs. And the fact I only have _2_ of them really limits their use. -- Terry K -- (26 years ago, 11-Jan-99, to lugnet.build)
