In-character post by Franz, prince and heir of the Lion Kingdom, son of Cleo
and Marck.
The time: about two moons ago.
-----
I open the door and enter the short hallway. The pictures on the wall,
though familiar to me, are as always enchanting. One of the ships always
seems to be moving; in another, the river seems to flow. The bluish-white
walls are a reminder of Lumina's field; automatically, I think again of the
ocean and what it holds. But how could I not? The allure of the entrance
room pales when I think of the mystery and glamour in those three words:
Isle of Mist.
Today is not like those other times, the many many times I've visited this
house. Today is different.
Lumina doesn't look up from his book as he calls out, "She's in her room,
Franz." Like always. But oh, doesn't he know today is different? Can't he
feel it in the air? My skin tingles with excitement.
"I'm not here to see her today," I say, trying, trying so hard to contain my
voice.
"Oh?" Lumina's tone is calm, not a bit surprised. As if he expected this. He
looks up for a split second, and immediately buries his nose back in the book.
"I'm here to see you, Lou. I have some questions."
"Ask away," Lumina closes his book, but his finger is still on the page he
was reading, as if he will just be a moment. But I have so many questions
for him! And over *such* matters!
I take a deep breath.
"I've heard some things... rumors..."
Lumina gives me a sharp look. "Since when do you listen to *rumors*, my
boy?" He opens his book again. 'No, no, I can't let him get away now! I have
to know!'
"Well, these aren't exactly-- I mean-- just tell me, tell me if it's true!
About the Isle, the Isle of Mist!"
"Ahhh," A slow smile spreads on Lumina's face. He puts the book down.
'Finally.' "So you've heard about the fabled Isle. And its fabled Mist. And
its fabled resurrection, then, I'm sure."
I try to concentrate. I mustn't lose my composure. "Fabled, sir? *Fabled*?"
'Good going. Nice and calm,' says my little voice.
'Stop being sarcastic.' I reply to myself.
'You blew it now--'
"Well, Franz, as far as I know, it's a matter of pure legend."
"But Lou - it can't - surely you've already heard what happened at the
Gathering! Though you weren't there... but Cleo told you? Didn't she? It's
proof of the existence of the Isle! And everyone knows it!"
"Yes, of Draven making his 'announcement'. I would hardly call that proof,
son." Lumina has an air of condescension about him just now. I want to
leave. No, I want to stay and convince him. I want to do a good many things
that are totally inappropriate.
Before I manage to make up my mind about what to do, I hear a weird noise.
Behind me. It is the sound of a - a twinkle. I turn around. A crystal ball -
I always used to think it was just there for props - it's glimmering and
twinkling, with a soft din - din - din - sound.
Lumina crosses in front of the desk. He sighs. He mutters something as he
walks over to the ball. I think, although I'm not sure, that he says: "What
now?" He looks at the ball. Letters seem to form, but I can't read it - it's
not English - nor French, nor any language I know.
"What is it saying?" I whisper. I didn't mean to whisper. I've never seen
anything like this before. Lou rarely uses any majick. He says it - defies
the balance - or something.
Lumina starts translating it to me:
"The recent revelations made by the mysterious old man, Draven at the
Gathering have caught the..." He pauses. My eyes grow wider. "The attention
of nearly everyone in, umm, our world. He has contacted me - Gregor, that
is, the person writing this - personally and asked that I relay information
throughout the majickal community."
"See? See! So it's not a fable! It's for real!"
Lumina nods slightly and falls silent. He is still reading intently. I sit
down. He was wrong. But how could Lumina be wrong? I wanted him to be wrong,
but I didn't think it was possible!
I wait until he finishes reading.
He sighs. Deeper this time. He walks over to me.
"You were right, Franz. The island *is* real." I'm still in shock. I say
nothing. "You know, my boy, I may be the greatest majician in the Lion
Kingdom, but there are many better and wiser than me. And I do not know
everything."
('I wonder if he read my mind?')
"Yes, yes," I murmur. "I seem to recall Luran, a Lion I met at the
Gathering, he mentioned that we each have 'our' majicians and we easily
forget they are not so powerful... but I thought he was wrong..."
Lumina nodded. "Your Luran is correct. The world is vast and wide, only few
majick-users can know about it all. I do not. I admit I was wrong." I was
wondering if that was indeed possible... and he answered. "And in case you
were wondering, I cannot read minds exactly - but I can detect thought-leaps
- and I could tell you were troubled by the fact I was wrong."
I think. This is all very new to me. But over all, above everything, I know
one thing:
'I must see the Isle of Mist.'
"Mm-hmmm," Lumina mumbles. "Franz, I think I have a plan..."
-----
Today, two moons later, we are finally ready to set sail. It took us time to
convince Cleo that a voyage to the mythical Isle is neccessary and of
interest to the kingdom. It took Siffera time to persuade us that she should
come. It took us time to prepare a strong ship, enough food and supplies to
last months; who knows how long we may wish to stay. Cleo found the best
crew in the kingdom. And today we are embarking; Lumina, Siffera, 30 fine,
strong sailors, Captain Gerald, and I. Today we leave for the journey of a
lifetime. In seven days, according to Lumina and Gerald's calculations, we
will land on the Isle of Mist.

Out of character chatter:
Pictures will come really really soon! I promise!
Right on Leah, Wilson, Chris, James and Brian - thanks for posting stuff so
quickly! You have no idea how much effort has been put into this.
To everyone, please pick up the strings we've sent out, and PULL! (Or follow
along!) You'll soon reach the center of the world, the heart of Castle
World... the Isle of Mist.
