    LDraw CD-ROM Project —Tim Courtney
A few people have been entertaining the idea of creating an LDraw CD-ROM. I discussed it with Terry and Jacob, and then obtained the permission of the Jessiman family to go ahead with it. I thought I'd present this idea to the group for feedback and (...) (24 years ago, 4-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev, lugnet.cad, lugnet.cad.dev.org.ldraw, lugnet.cad.datfest)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Larry Pieniazek
650 CDs are a LOT! Have you done research that leads you to believe you can move 650? Remember, the upfront cost goes up if you can't sell them all. You may want to consider skipping the artwork and using CDRoms instead. The per CD cost is higher (...) (24 years ago, 4-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —John Jensen
(...) I'd gladly pay 10$ or 20$ for a suite with LDraw and related software, if it is on a pressed CD. I would also pay beforehand if that is what it takes to ensure the project. Why not make a count of who's willing to buy such a CD? It is the (...) (24 years ago, 4-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Tim Courtney
(...) As I'm sure a lot of people would do. I don't think we'll charge near that much for the CD, beacuse the goal isn't profit and I told the Jessimans' that we wouldn't collect on it. But I think donations will be accepted to cover up- front cost. (...) (24 years ago, 4-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Which is why I suggested it. Look, my point is just this: before 1800 is shelled out, make sure that you have some reasonable expectation of recovering all or most of it. I'll gladly put up a hundred bucks to make this happen, with no (...) (24 years ago, 4-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Tim Courtney
(...) How do you suggest going about determining how many people will buy the CD? BTW - the Jessiman family requested 50 copies already at cost. :) (...) Another good idea I didn't think of. Me also being banking/finance illiterate, would this go (...) (24 years ago, 4-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Well, that's a good question. There isn't much of anything that better determines who will buy it than asking people to pay for it up front, which is what I was suggesting be done with an X account. That way you don't have checks to worry (...) (24 years ago, 5-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Tim Courtney
(...) Are you referring to www.x.com, or is X a type of account at a normal bank? (...) I do think that they should get as many CDs as they like for cost, because of the family connection to James and also because they gave us permission to produce (...)            Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Larry Pieniazek
(...) I'm referring to www.x.com but I'm not sure what you mean by "normal" bank. :-) I got checks printed by them with my name on them, I can go to a local ATM and use the debit card to get money out of the account, just like any other checking (...)            Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Tim Courtney
(...) Ok, well I guess it was better phrased 'traditional bank,' and I was referring to a building with a foundation, four walls, and people who work inside. One that has a canopy you can drive under and press buttons. :) I guess internet- based (...) (24 years ago, 5-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Steve Bliss
(...) If we're going to talk money, we should - Decide on a name for the group - Pick some bylaws - Elect a treasurer Once we've got a treasurer, that person can obtain an account, and deal with collections and payments. Steve (24 years ago, 7-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Mike Stanley
(...) And DEFINITELY nix the full-color pouch or whatever it was. Full color anything is too expensive for something like this. Let the programs and the dat files wow people - don't depend on a few pretty pictures on a pouch they'll probably throw (...) (24 years ago, 5-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Chuck Sommerville
I too would pay $10 to $20 for the disk, If just to support the cause. I really appreciate that I got so many quality tools for free in the first place. -Chuck (24 years ago, 9-Mar-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Tim Courtney
(...) I think $10 is a fair asking price (no more) for the CD, and the profits will go into an account for jumpstarting ldraw.org (its own server?)/future Virtual Lego events (a la illusive .datFest). The money should be distributed via a vote of (...) (24 years ago, 10-Mar-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Jonathan Wilson
(...) It would be seriously cheaper to just burn them onto cdr disks. And you can just make the number you need and burn more when that lot runs out. You could even make it an ongoing thing with people being to get ldraw on cd instead of spending 5 (...) (24 years ago, 4-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Tim Courtney
(...) The point of this would be to have manufactured pressed CDs. The original intent of the material is for distribution at .datFest, where attendees will be expecting this quality of work [1]. I think its well worth the extra $1/CD to go with a (...)         Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Adam Ogle
How about have a submission for the CD to include models (sample models). BTW I like the idea. It would keep that LDraw folder with all the junk down!          Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Steve Bliss
(...) The general public wouldn't know if it's a CD or CD-R. The only way to tell is (a) your obsolete CD drive can't read CD-R disks (b) you have a CD-R(W) drive or software which reports the type of the disc. Steve (24 years ago, 7-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Re: LDraw CD-ROM Project —Mike Stanley
(...) $100 to ship 650 cds (even with pouches) sounds high. I ordered 500 blank CDs with jewel cases that I guarantee weighed more and took up just as much room as 650 with cardboard pouches and shipping was in the thirties. (24 years ago, 5-Feb-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)
