I agree that a smoke puff shouldn't be in the library of Lego parts, since it
isn't a Lego part and it is POV specific. However, having a directory of
POV-specific .dat files for POV rendering is a perfectly reasonable thing for
POV users to have, and it doesn't do any harm to non-POV rendering people.
POV effects could go in a POV toolbox.
Also, I don't agree that a POV modeler is the way to go for all POV effects. If
I want my Lego lamps to light up, or my Lego nozzles to have rocket flames, it
would be far far more easy to have .dat objects I can just stick in as I build
my models.
Different people want to do different things with the existing tools, and it
isn't wrong to have specialized implementation-specific tools in the toolbox. I
can't see any reason for following a data structure designer's original
intent, since the state of the art is constantly advancing and evolving. If we
want to stick to original intentions, we should be using computers for
calculating balistic tables as they were intended, instead of for rendering
Lego models, and we should be exchanging particle physics data with the web
instead of having this discussion.

| (...) I agree. POV commands are great for cleaning up the geometry. This was what I was really hoping for. However, if the command set is flexible enough for users to make their own custom parts for their private collections to do special effects (...) (24 years ago, 31-Dec-00, to lugnet.cad)
