I have a few of those non-slotted grey track pieces, they came with
<set:4555>
I'm 100% sure those came with that set, they don't match the building
instructions (so the 'evidence' in the thread you mentioned just isn't
really evidence, TLC doesn't redo the instructions every different
production run). I have bought two of those sets in last february and • they
both had 'unslotted' track.

Fascinating.

I bought the sets from the S@H Canada takeover (see message
http://www.lugnet.com/market/shopping/?n=2845 )
Possibly more people have bought from this lot and got those grey straight
track pieces.
I was wondering if there is a way to determine where a LEGO set is produced
(I still have the boxes but I couldn't find a clue on it)?

Idle speculation: ON.

Maybe the more modern version of the mold wore out and since they might • have
been thinking that 4555 (and the WW mine set) were the last sets that • would use
the part for some period of time, dig out the archived blue mold and use • that
to finish the production run instead of doing all new tooling for another
instance of the more modern version mold???

Sounds like a possible scenario to me.
