Center point/axis matching?  If you know the center axis of a stud and the
center axis of a place where a stud can be inserted, they should be able to
"lock" together a lot easier than the side surfaces.  Same thing for the center
point of a ball joint and its corresponding socket joint, the bumps and divots
on a hinge...  This idea would probably require defining different types of
"click" points/axes, since a TECHNIC socket joint can accept a ball joint
centered in the actual socket, or studs in the little loops on the side, but the
ball joint won't fit in the center of the loop and the stud will fall right
through the socket, and a click-hinge just won't work at all.  You could also
add restriction planes for the tops and bottoms of bricks and plates so you
can't shove one brick inside of another.  It'd also be nice to have the flate
face surfaces defined for TECHNIC parts so a pin's flange will bump on the
indented surface of a beam or the bottom edge of a brick.

Personally, I'd prefer to see the TECHNIC parts get set up with clickiness
before regular bricks.  I'm always having to turn TECHNIC parts transparent so I
can make sure I've got axles inserted correctly into single-ended axle holes,
but the default settings are tailored to work for bricks and plates.

There's already been a lot of discussion on doing "clickable" building using an additional connection database, and that's certainly doable. Do a search for LCD, or LDraw Connection Database, or see here: (URL) I was saying is that there's no easy (...) (20 years ago, 15-Aug-04, to lugnet.cad)

(...) In theory, clickable parts can be done without any extra connection information as you suggest. In practice, this becomes extremely difficult, since the placement has to be exact in order for the parts to mesh together. That's easy when you're (...) (20 years ago, 15-Aug-04, to lugnet.cad)
