If the ankles aren't strong, then it ain't gonna stand. I have a design in
my head for what I think will be a good strong ankle, but I gotta get me
some more o' them ball joint thingys first.

I think some of the Bionicle sets come with them; they don't appear to serve
any purpose other than decoration.

(...) Actually, I've found those ball joints in the Bionicle and Technic Stormtrooper and C3-P0 sets to be very useful at the hips, shoulders, and ankles in several of my recent mecha and large droid designs such as the Perseus, Thunderlasher, (...) (23 years ago, 29-May-01, to lugnet.build.mecha)
