I think some of the Bionicle sets come with them; they don't appear to serve
any purpose other than decoration.

Actually, I've found those ball joints in the Bionicle and Technic Stormtrooper and C3-P0 sets to be very useful at the hips, shoulders, and ankles in several of my recent mecha and large droid designs such as the Perseus, Thunderlasher, (...) (23 years ago, 29-May-01, to lugnet.build.mecha)
