Usually, I'm really happy with the rest, and the legs end up being too
stubby, too long, too spindley, too rigid. I think I'll just add jump jet
packs to the back and make them all "floating mechs" from now on...

From what I've noticed of mecha design, most mecha have short thighs and
long lower legs, terminating in rather large feet. So put some basic armor
plating on the thighs, and put heavier stuff on the lower legs. For feet,
I'd suggest keeping them pretty streamlined, adding detail to the heels and
toes.
