Hello Brian,

if I got you right you’re talking about something like this?


   This one is using a single rotational click hinge.
It was torne apart by the weight of the mecha I’m working on.
 

   So the second uses double ball joints.
The joints don’t break apart but they don’t hold the weight.
I had to add a break. Now it works for me.

I hope this might be helpfull for your thoughts.
