That's pretty much what I would do, too. Although one problem is that a lot
(most?) of the structure of a *Lunar* base would be underground: a Mars base
might be easier, since I would expect most of it to be on the surface.
Hmmm, one way to attack this that might make the exhibit even cooler would be
to build everything as it would be underground, then do a papier-mache
"Moonscape" that sits on top of it, with holes where the above-ground parts
of the structures poke through. At the press of a button, have the "surface"
hoisted up, so the viewer can see what's underneath.
A couple of other random thoughts: there are UFO, Insectoids, and
underwater sets currently available on deep clearance that can be pillaged for
various dome and corridor components.
A realistic "pioneering" base would have several different kinds of
construction, reflecting the evolution of design as various approaches were
tried. You could write some good stories to go with this, that would really
engage the audience. Like, say, a collapsed building with a tragic tale
about how one design idea turned out not to be as good as it looked on paper.
