Thank you, Nathan!  I think we have our smoking gun.

Inside an older snapshot, I just did this:

    $ cd news/art/lugnet/announce
    $ grep ^Expires: *
    1:Expires: Fri, 1 Jan 2010 00:00:00 GMT
    2:Expires: Fri, 1 Jan 2010 00:00:00 GMT
    37:Expires: Fri, 1 Jan 2010 00:00:00 GMT

Hits on that string are in files numbered 1, 2, and 37.  Bingo.

Huh. I wonder why that message 37 got an Expires header, but no others?
Copy/paste remnant??
A wider grep found no other articles (other than the 1/2 automated ones) having
Expires headers.

Although I'm puzzled by why those automated messages had expiry dates on them
at all (I don't remember adding them and don't know why 2010 was chosen instead
of something like 2999), this does put my mind at ease about this cluster of
articles, because this definitely wasn't some random spooky disk issue!  :-)

I'm not sure why, but I am pretty sure you did it on purpose:

:-)

Jerry also noticed the following were missing (and restored them):

    lugnet.announce.brickset:3
    lugnet.disney:125

The disappearance of those is still a bit of a mystery.

Yeah, they do break the pattern, don't they? Although those messages may
have disappeared at some other time. I'm not subscribed to those groups,
so I wouldn't know whether they were there recently.
