Thank you, Nathan! I think we have our smoking gun.
Inside an older snapshot, I just did this:
$ cd news/art/lugnet/announce
$ grep ^Expires: *
1:Expires: Fri, 1 Jan 2010 00:00:00 GMT
2:Expires: Fri, 1 Jan 2010 00:00:00 GMT
37:Expires: Fri, 1 Jan 2010 00:00:00 GMT
Hits on that string are in files numbered 1, 2, and 37. Bingo.
A wider grep found no other articles (other than the 1/2 automated ones) having
Expires headers.
Although I'm puzzled by why those automated messages had expiry dates on them
at all (I don't remember adding them and don't know why 2010 was chosen instead
of something like 2999), this does put my mind at ease about this cluster of
articles, because this definitely wasn't some random spooky disk issue! :-)
So, evidently, some internal process, for some reason, seems to have gone
through and expired articles based on that header, according to NNTP rules.
It's possible the process was accidentally triggered by something deep in the
NNTP server when Jerry was seeing those other problems he mentioned.
Jerry also noticed the following were missing (and restored them):
lugnet.announce.brickset:3
lugnet.disney:125
The disappearance of those is still a bit of a mystery.

| (...) That message was definitely there just the other day, my newsreader downloaded it, marked it read, etc. (and I also specifically remember reading it). So it went AWOL the same time as those other ones on Monday. I notice that that message (...) (2 months ago, 10-Jun-26, to lugnet.admin.nntp)
