You have to actually go through steps 1 and 2 (once) because the cookies aren't
sent by your browser unless you're "in" the area of the website to which the
cookie applies. (It's a bandwidth-saving optimization because some cookies
can get pretty large.)
The cookie named NEWSPOST isn't sent by your browser unless you are viewing a
URL which begins with http://www.lugnet.com/news/post/ and the cookie named
NEWSMAIL isn't sent by your browser unless you are viewing a URL which begins
with http://www.lugnet.com/news/mail/ . (If you look in your cookies file in
your browser's config you should see server-relative URLs confirming this.)
The member-sign-in cookie is generally short and is sent by your browser for
any URL on the site, by means of specifying a server-relative URL of / .
