I want to be able to specify "AND" and/or "OR" queries using the search page
(1).  Currently, all searches seem to be using "OR".

Actually, it's using a weighted/scoring algorithm which ranks A AND B higher
than A OR B, while considering both implicitly.

That is, if you enter "foo bar", then the order of things returned is
roughly:

- First, articles containing both "foo" and "bar" and containing them near
each other and/or near the top of the document,

- Next, articles containing both "foo" and "bar" anywhere,

- And finally, articles containing either "foo" or "bar".

But it's a numerical weighting/scoring method, so an article with "foo blah
bar" at word-position 18 may score lower than an article with "foo blah blah
blah bar" at word-position 10; or an article with "foo" in the first 3 words
but not "bar" anywhere might score higher than an article with "foo" at
word-position 300 and bar at word-position 400.

Anyway, it does its best to consider word pairs as being more important than
single separate words, but I agree that something more sophisticated would
really be nice.

Also, it would be nice to specify multi-word phrases which won't be broken
up during the query, but that's not that important if we can get "AND" in
the query.

I really like the way AltaVista lets you use double-quotes (") and plus-
signs (+) and minus signs (-).  Something like that?

Having these would mean saving me quite a bit of time as I research FAQ
items in the newsgroups.

What about specifying a target date?  That's something I want.  I want to be
able to say, "Anything that's about 2 weeks old, give that a higher score
than the other results," or "Give the very newest stuff (say, stuff that's
about 0 hours old) a higher score than the other results."  This would help
me dig up old threads better when I knew a couple of the words that appeared
and the approximate date that they appeared on.  (I don't like the way
DejaNews restricts things to a hard-edged date range...I like everything
fuzzy :-)

(...) That's weird; I sometimes see results with just A or just B above results with both A and B. e.g., search for "Lego Maniac", and I see two results with just "Lego", one with "Lego - Maniac", one with "Lego", etc. Plus, there are times when I (...)
