(...) OK, Here's a few helpful tips. If 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 pieces have NO tubes underneath, and they have slots on 2 of the sides of the bricks, they are from 1949-56. Well, I'm going to assume they are "extremely rare" in comparison to the old days. Today, they probably only run through the molds 2-3 times to clean them (the # of elements in a mold run varies by element), whereas in the old days, it might have (...)   The oldest known LEGO bricks set of 1949??
 
I had always been looking for the very first 1949 LEGO sets with plastic bricks, but the closest I ever got to was circa 1950... a year after the 1949 introduction of the LEGO brick (known as Automatic Binding Bricks until 1953).
