Don't know if anyone knows, or cares, but the 4561 is on sale at
kbkids.com  for $103.96 with free shipping and a free gift. Pretty good
deal for this much maligned set.

It's an even better deal if you use the 15% off deal available from coupon
sites like flamingoworld.com or deal-finder.com.

I picked up one of these for under $90, plus I threw in another 6441 to get
over $100 to pick up the Buzz Lightyear/Soccer Barbie doll.

I figure I'll give the Buzz and Barbie to toys for tots along with some of the
Lego sets that I already set aside for this.

Thanks Will, I didn't know about the 15% coupons. Wish I had used that instead
of the $10.00 when I ordered the Mindstorms set last week :(
The suggestion for the Toys for Tots is great.
BTY did anybody else read the reviews for the set, seems some kids really enjoy
playing with this train. I think alot more would if TLG made it easier to buy
track and other accessories (but that has been discussed here before).

I picked up a 6441 just for the sake of it - I had a $5 coupon, and with
shipping it was $24 - seemed like a good price, and I wanted another Divers
set.

There's also a sale code for %15 off from www.deal-finder.com/toys which i
believe knocks the price to $88.  An even better price.  Also the shipping is
free until the 12th.

Thanks for pointing this out! I bought 1 while they were on sale at Target.
Maybe I'll pick up a second at KBKids.com.

Thanks for the tip.

I have 4 that I got at Target that now will be going back after my KB
ones arrive, unless there is someone somewhere who wants them. I doubt
it would make economic sense, though. Shipping would eat up most of the
savings, these ARE current sets.

+ fee shipping... takes it down to about $77 each.

Well, after just ordering one from KB last night, I ordered one from Toysmart
after seeing this post.

Mine totalled to $72.79 - there was no shipping, no tax, and 30% off the
$103.98 sale price.

CRUD, I KNEW this was going to happen - I promised myself I'd never get into
trains, because I knew I'd blow too much on them.  I've spent probably $1K in
the last month on misc train sets (LOTS of 4532/4539), and I have yet to have
an engine :-/

Their website could use a better search engine.  Following Larry's advice, I
went there, struggled for a while then used their aptly named "Product Finder".

I searched for brand "lego" and cost "$100+" and the train was the only set
that was listed.

Try a search on lego and rail, they use the set names as in "Railway
Express", I ordered one today after doing a search with the set name.

Okay, so I'm gonna order me a copy of this set and open the Pandora's box
that is LEGO trains...what I'd like to see is a scan of the back panel of
the package that shows the alternate models that can be built.  Who
knows...if they're that much better than the main model I might buy another
set or two!

Can anyone help me?

Hey Will-

Forget about alternate models-- create your own!  Find a train book and model
a prototype.  And while you're at it, make it 8 studs wide{;^D

Well gee...I'll probably do that to.  But that's like....work!  This is
supposed to be fun :-)

As to your 8 stud wide suggestion...I have successfully resisted the
pressure to model fire apparatus in a 6 wide format, so I imagine I'll have
no problems resisting your evil influence as well :-)

lol, don't be so sure;-)  If you saw Bill Toenjes' latest 6 wide fire truck,
you would forsake 4 wide forever.  His stuff is wonderful, although AFAIK he
doesn't have any pics posted anywhere at the moment... except this nugget:
http://63.74.171.239/gallery_show_detail.asp?id=57   It's a school bus, but
most of his work is fire/rescue related.

For that matter, check out another GMLTCer and GMLUG host Paul Foster's 6 wide
emergency vehicles:  http://www.gmlug.org/foster/  *I* would never go
back;-).....

As for 8 wide trains, I don't have many pics of my stuff up yet (just heres
and theres from the GMLTC web site), but when I do you'll feel the seduction
of better scale, detail, and realism-- I gair ron tee it;-)

Hi Will,

some days ago (http://www.lugnet.com/trains/?n=2980), I (as a newbie) asked
about pointers to detailed instructions for 4561 alternates, and received some
very useful general advice, but no practical construction examples.

Could it be that most of the connoisseurs are so busy hating the set that they
don't build anything with it...? ;-)
(That's a smiley, guys, this is NOT a flame!  ;-)

Or don't they like to admit in public that they DON'T KNOW how to build that
nice small old-fashioned steam engine depicted on the back?
(now if that doesn't bring them out of the brushwood...)

Greetings,
Martin

Actually, my wife loves the set. I bought her another to make a 'full' train.

Hey, does anyone have any plans to make a power tap like set of wheels to allow
you to power a car but not have a motor? I've love to install couch lighting in my
trains.

Don't know HOW??? Hmrphf!

There isn't ANYTHING train related that I couldn't build.

If I wanted to... I just don't want to.

PS, I think it's time to start a thread in off-topic.debate about how
unfair it is that someone else got all the 4547s from DYA and I didn't
get any, right? :-)

Seriously though, buying 4547s for $38 from Emmanuel is like taking candy
from a baby.  I hate to see a good trader like Emmanuel literally screw
himself out of $1000s.  I would feel funny being the "lucky" buyer.

But look how they are now desperately trying to de-rail (!) the thread about
the issue if they can build 4561 alternates... :-P

I'm not building any alternates ;-)  I bought 2 4561s, so I can tear them apart,
and use them for the basis of my cargo train.

This is my first EVER train, so expert I am definitely NOT ;-)

And I might even have all the transblue 1x4x3 and 1x2x3 thinwall panels from
both trains for sale/trade.  Haven't decided yet, it depends on how I decide to
build some of the cargo cars.
