with a little exploration you can also find a white tanker, a tan and blue
hopper and what appears to be a green, black and red passenger car. The
methods used for this "search" are somewhat questionable though. I think
they look outstanding. I will get into trains yet...

Unfortunately, the glass looks like trans-light blue.
The caboose glass, however, looks like clear.

The set I like the most out of these new ones is the caboose
http://shop.lego.com/images/products/TYPE10/set384x288us010013.jpg
eh, it is OK. The ends are on backwards (in my mind the tall support things
should slope inwards and be square on the inside edge).
http://shop.lego.com/images/products/TYPE10/set384x288us010014.jpg
This one is very cute. I bet it will sell well. If it was in stores (with more
train stuff) it could really attract new train builders.
http://shop.lego.com/images/products/TYPE10/set384x288us010015.jpg
Why did they used stacked 1x1 round bricks. I wonder if they tried thinner
supports, like the ones on 10013, but changed their minds. Hm, 1x2x3
windows...that will make it hard to sit minifigs next to the windows; won't it?
http://shop.lego.com/images/products/TYPE10/set384x288us010016.jpg
Not bad. I don't think a real good solution for using these pieces in a tank car
yet. The pieces are attractive because of their roundness but their roundness is
the source of some substantial building issues. (By the way, does this mean LEGO
is now officially making trains 8 studs wide ;)[1]
http://shop.lego.com/images/products/TYPE10/set384x288us010017.jpg
Interesting design, and it looks like it can be emptied from the sides. I don't
know if I like the color scheme. I am leaning towards I don't like the color scheme.
Two things bother me about this line of trains. (1) The extensive use of the 4x6
double sided roof piece in the caboose (10014) and the coach (10017). I'd rather
have more flexible (use wise) parts. (2) These aren't "normal" train sets. It
seems that LEGO direct is interested in LEGO trains, but LEGO (normal) isn't.
Unless models like the caboose are included in the LEGO catalogues that go into
the regular models I worry that a lot of potential buyers will be missed. So,
the train line will not sell as well as it could, and LEGO "normal" will
continue to neglect trains.

Thats what i was thinking too... I'll have to get back into LEGO 6/8 wide
trains...
Those white quarter circle panels make me happy, not more brasso to get
white ones for a grain tower.

These are GREAT price points, at least relatively speaking. Compare 10013
with the wagon plate, 4 wheels, 2 bogie plates and two couplers pack, for
instance. (which I can't find on the site at the moment, it's being slow and
uncooperative)
Let's hope the other items are at similar points too.
> Enjoy and pass on the info apparently its not avaliable yet.
You gotta love the copywriters that TLC uses. Quoting without permission for
the purposes of review:
"Attach the caboose to the end of your freight train so the train crew has
someplace to sleep on long journeys! It's also the perfect spot to keep the
kitchen so passengers can enjoy a meal. No train is complete without one! "
I'm not going to pick that apart but anyone who knows much about railroading
is probably laughing their head off at the moment.

Indeed. like this:
http://www.miltontrainworks.com/item_info.html#MTW-1002-rd
But their previous sets got it wrong too, I think... consider the car in 4565.

True. However LD is showing that they can expand their line nicely. Just as
we hoped they would. I'll settle for that, as long as LD makes their
numbers, we will get more.
Although I think these are a bit cuter than I prefer I will be buying
multiple copies of all of them, partly to keep my 9V line complete, and
partly because they have great parts at good (relative to other sets) price
points.
Color me excited.

10013 - 121pcs, $16.99
3737 - 15pics, $14.99
Gee, that shows how much overpriced 3737 is (or that 10013 is underpriced).
All these new sets ROCK! Even if you can't agree with the accuracy of the
sets, they certainly have some killer parts in them. The caboose has the
black plane windows WITH glass, the 1x8 plate with rail, 1x2 plate with rail,
and tons of T-handle 1x1 bricks.
I can see myself ordering several of each of most of these new sets, simply
for the parts.

Maybe they wish to try out the "new" marketing filosofy that this kind of
sets may have more apeal to the general public, before they start flooding
the shops with a similar type of product. Remeber that the My own Train
locomotives, due to the "on demand" diversity, could not be sold trough the
traditional shop channel, but these five sets certainly can.

Those are neat looking train cars. But I was just curious about something.
I thought that the Legend sets were only going to be in the 10000 line.
It's really not a big deal though...just curious.

There is an unfortunate critical difference though. 3737 includes a 6x28
train base where 100013 uses a 6x24.
It's interesting that most sets which come with 8 wheel cars use the
6x24 base, though 4565 has two of each. So far, as far as I can see for
recent sets, 3737 is the only source of black 6x28 bases. I discovered
the critical difference the other night when I was putting together a
7715 and 7719 from parts. I had to go with red bases (but I've now got
some 3737s on order to fix this). Both of those cars would be awkward to
shrink.

I don't think Brad ever said the Legend were the ONLY sets to be in the 10xxx
range, I think he just noted they'd be IN the new 10xxx range.
They had to move to 5digit sooner or later, they've already doubled up on too
many #s before.

I think so. Pandora's box has officially been opened:-) As for your analysis of the
tank car, I think you are correct-- the ladder shouldn't penetrate the tank cylinder,
but rather run up the outside of it. Connecting all of this is a part of the building
issues you mentioned. But it's a great start:-)

Okay, Chris, now here are 2 things I *like* about this line of trains.
(1) Their ability to appeal to 2 different groups. These trains are fairly basic and
can appeal to kids and AFOLs who enjoy running stock LEGO trains-- they look good
enough to run out of the box (as opposed to, say, the 4561, 4533, etc). They also have
appeal to LTDs and other AFOLs who crave specialty train parts such as the 1x2x3 green
train window or the 1x2x2 black thin wall with clear pane; or parts in new colors, such
as the 1x2 green log brick, or the 1x2 clear plate.
(2) Their price points. These sets are relatively cheap, which is good for LTDs and
parts bursters alike. This, actually, addresses one of your complaints about the roof
piece. I guess I don't mind the POOPs, because they are keeping the overall price
down. For me, I see these sets as beefed up parts packs. Except for a few choice
elements, most of the set is extraneous, so the cheaper the better. For someone
willing to run a set out of the box unchanged, I think that it wouldn't be an issue
anyway.
As far as LEGO's interest in trains goes, it does appear that LD has taken the mantle
of the trains theme and is running with it. What is good about that is that when these
and other offerings do well, it *will* spark the interest of "LEGO normal", and that
means financially *justifiable* reasons to augment the 45xx line (which presumably
would mean new parts, track? etc).
But even if "LEGO normal" continues to neglect 9 volt, it wouldn't be so bad, because
it is my understanding that LD can accomplish most of what "LEGO normal" can anyway.

Hi John,
I just wanted to make certain that every one knew that I brought you into this
as a joke. I got the 8 stud wide comment in so you wouldn't have to.
You make some very good points. In the end, LEGO is making trains, and the
prices are reasonable, so it is a step in the right direction. (The song "Follow
the Yellow BRICK Road" just popped into my head. How appropriate:)

Lego Direct or the larger corporate unit, either way it does not matter to
me who markets the train line. I'm very pleased that someone at Lego
recognizes the Lego train line as as valuable product.
These trains are neat. The only thing that surprises me is that there are no
minifigures in the photos. Not that I'm short on mini-figures, but I would
like to see some new train oriented figures.
In the US S@H web site, I only saw the 10013 Open Freight Wagon and 10014
Caboose. Are the other cars listed under other countries in S@H?

No, the other cars are not listed on the web site. We are assuming that they
will be released, but LEGO has not released them. The sets were found by
entering alternate numbers into the URL field. The speculation is that LEGO put
these images onto the server in preparation for their release. I guess that they
figured that no one would see the pictures because there are no links that point
to the images.
Excluding minifigs might be a way of keeping the costs down. Minifigs usually
run 1-1.25$ per figure, right?

Without trying to be a wet blanket (I *did* wait several days to point this
out) TLC has pointed out in the past that they consider stuff that you
cannot navigate to via things you can click on from a public starting
point... they consider that stuff to be non public and not legitimate topics
for discussion because it's sensitive prerelease info.
Yes, the web doesn't actually work that way. I go spelunking for pictures at
sites all the time and stuff not meant to be public ought not to be on
publicly reachable servers.
But Todd has said he doesn't want LUGNET to be a leak club.
What does this all mean? I dunno. Draw your own conclusions and do what you
think is appropriate.

I don't really fall into 'knows much about railroading', but aren't they
0 for 3 on that copy?

I wondered about repeating the links, but the files are in publicly accessible
directories and the files are numbered consecutively. It is not like we are
cracking into a private directory. LEGO is being naive if they think no one is
going to look. However, since the Lugnet Admin. feels it is inappropriate to
repeat the links here, then I won't do it again.
Chris
PS Ever gone spelunking on my site? I had some wedding pictures (friend's
wedding) up there a while back. Is "spelunking" the internet lingo for digging
up files on web servers, or is it just a term that you like to use?
