well, its been ahwile since i last posted, but i was finally able to get
pictures of my newest ship. introducing: her majesty's light frigate Scimitar.
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=59005
post-mod of course!
she carries 24 guns, 18 on the lower deck and 6 on the upper. she is 4 wide
center hull sections long. these pictures are all taken in battle trim, not
under full sail, hence, the missing main sail and fore sail. i cut these sails
from heavy canvas, and they came out pretty well. its the first time i can say i
"succeded" in making custom sails. my others were pure junk :-) . oh well,
practice makes perfect! anyway, i decided to try a different color scheme, and
was particularly happy with the results. plus, the colors are more picture
friendly than the black of my other ships. i never liked that the center
sections didnt come up as high as the bow and stern sections, so one was forced
to fill them with non brown bricks, so i ordered some brown ones off bricklink,
and again, i like the way they came out. however, i am most especially happy
with the stern, always a matter of concern for me. my ships usually go through
3-4 stern incarnations until i am satisfied. i tried to duplicate the stern of
the real ships, with it's curved planking as much as using straight bricks would
allow, and tried to add the gold highlights and make them flow with the curve of
the stern also. i absolutely love the way it came out. it is the most realistic
stern i have constructed to date. so, the fates conspired to make everything
work out correctly for me on this ship, and consequently, it is my favorite. i
am actually considering building a 5 center section version to go along with
this one, in the same color even :-)! actually, i am looking for another color
scheme to do my next ship in. the problem is, lego doesnt offer the high slopes
in many colors. i would like to do a nice dark red, but alas... anyway, i am
extremely happy with the way this ship turned out, and my other ships are happy
with the addition to the fleet. i have another ship i will be posting as soon as
i get pics, but it is in the old color scheme. well, PLMKWYT! oh, and how does
one insert pictures into their post? i am tired of the old post-a-link method
and would like to jazz up my posts a little, and not have to depend on all the
pics to clear mod on bricklink. thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
oh, on an off note, Richie, i remember reading that you had a brit ship in the
works, just curious how thats coming along! always look forward to seeing
another brit set sail :-).
thanks!

First, you need to change the format of your post from from plain text to
Formatted Text (FTX). You can then insert pictures using double angled brackets
(a pair of less than signs, then the image URL, then a pair of greater than
signs).
And to get the image URL, keep clicking on the image in brickshelf until you
have a URL that ends with .jpg. Thats the deep link.
Theres a handy quick reference guide to FTX on the right of the posting window
too.
|
oh, on an off note, Richie, i remember reading that you had a brit

|
Ah... you speak of the prophecy of the ship that is to come. The one that will
bring balance to the Port.
Due to the impending geographical relocation of Port Brique (ie Im moving
house), I have had less time and space for shipbuilding :-(. In fact, most of my
LEGO is in storage. I have only four ships at home (my wife would roll her
eyes at that only!). The Madame Thenardier is presently the serving French
flagship, and HMLBrig Demand the British!
However, one of those four ships is, in skeletal form, the 6th Rate HMLS
Frivolous. At the moment, she consists of fore, aft and four centre hull
sections, three masts (naturellement!) and a few props holding the masts in
place. I have visited the chandlers, and have most of whats needed on hand...
so its just a matter of space and time...
Anyway, back to waiting for the Scimitar to be moderated!

So I decide I'll drop by the board for the first time in a few weeks, try to
catch up, and whatnot. And then I open that link and the first words out of my
mouth are "Oh *my*!"
That's a good thing, trust me!
I must say, you've captured the feel of a man o' war as well I can imagine
possible in Lego -- epoch setting for certain! I'll just reiterate... your
colors, your tumblehome, and that *stern*! Great, great stuff!
And it's British! Being among the biggest RN-files on this board (sorry if I'm
stepping on toes with that) I'm glad to see we've got a very handsome ship in
the fleet!
I wait expectantly for whatever comes next!

Just echoing everyone else's comments - its beautiful! The sterncastle is
particularly well realised, as are the curves round the front (am I allowed to
say 'front' in here?).
It blows everything else out of the water! (ahahaha)
With all the imperial powers flexing their naval muscles, its getting hard for
an honest pirate to make a living... have to do something about that... :)

Hi Steve,
Nice looking ship! I think you did a nice job with the stern! It captures that
bowed feature common in old ships nicely! You also did a good job with the
color scheme! Nice work!

This one is really TOP !
Perfect job, I love it.
One small minor point:
I see these non-shooting canons on deck. The fact they can't shoot,
doesn't mean 'no bullets needed' !!
I think you should add some, just for looks of course :-)
Great work!

i was also worried about it being to blaah looking, but i decided if i just used
a strip of grey down the side, it wouldnt be overwhelmingly grey, and with
enough accent pieces, it helps to break up the color. i was also seriously
considering using dark green as my accent instead of blue. still may investigate
to see if i can get all the green parts i need, because i want to try it.

And yes, grey is much more photogenic than black.
Youve captured the stern magnificently!

thanks kenneth! i might try a similar 5 center section one in the future, with
slightly different accents, as my custom sails came out okay. my fleet is

thanks tom, i have always been unsatisfied with the sterns on my other ships,
and have craved the appearance of the traditional ones on the real ships. my
goal is to create period accurate ships as best as possible, but lego doesnt
always make it easy ;-)

you are definitely right. thats something i have never worked on too much, is
the small details such as cannon balls and other types of stuff that one would
commonly find on deck, and i will work on it, because i aim for detail ;-).

Very nice, very nice indeed. That stern
gallery really did come out nicely, and
the 3/4 after view cuts very well.
Hmmm, a third-rate...you'd probably have
to get away from the LEGO hulls for that;
but I have no doubt it can be done. And
it would most definitely be fearsome!

Theres nothing like a bit of inspiration! HMLS Frivolous now has two sides...
one built straight up from the hull pieces, the other using inverse 45deg slops
to widen it. Obviously one will be dismantled and reset at some point... I just
cant decide which at the moment. And its grey too... who would have thought?

lol, i thought i was the only one who did that i have 2 ideas on how to build
my ship, so i will built one side as such, and the other this way, and decide
what i like. sometimes, i even forget that the other side is still built
differently, and dont notice until its almost done. :-) i have never tried
increasing the width with inverse slopes, though you seem to use it on the
majority of your larger ships. i cant figure out how to build the part where the
inverse row of slopes ends and the regular width of the bow and stern sections
begins, if that makes any sense. i kind of wish i could find a way to increase
the width of my ships though, because the cannon on the top deck are really
close, and it just looks kinda funny to me. i would like to free up more deck
space for my intrepid sailors! i am glad i could inspire someone! i have taken a
lot of inspiration from .pirates, and it is nice to be able to make a
contribution. (and along the way to strike a little fear into the non-british
sailing types ;-) ) thanks!

Fabulous work. I think this may be the first to use tall slopes directly onto
the standard width. Very cool. The raised waist line is weel done too. I
agree with the general tumult about the stern. And then there's the unusual 3
stud gap between gunports that works so well.
Like Richie, you've got me revisiting my fleet, and counting my unused tall
slopes and gunport lids :-)

I must say, this is a beautiful model! Nice and clean and well detailed. Great
job!

(Sorry, Larry, for the delay. I just *now* saw your reply.) :P
The answer is: Both.
Technical reasons. If I see the "human" URL (instead of
the CGI one), I can snip off the tail end of the URL for
the parent folder, one level at a time...
Aesthetic reasons. The "human" URL is usually much easier
for a mush-brained human like me to remember as well as to
type. ;)
