I still have the Petoskey stones we gathered from the shore many years ago.
My son thinks they are the "coolest rocks" he has ever seen. Can you still
find them on the shoreline?? This would be a neat thing for my son.

If you are really lucky. They are getting very hard to find on beaches,
everyone looks for them there.

The way to find good ones is to haunt construction excavations. We found
some huge (over 100 pounds) ones that way when they were building the
development where I grew up (we had house #4 out of about 30)... and that is
still the good way. Take a bucket of water with you to wash the dirt off and
see the coral more clearly.

My understanding is that this fossil coral is estimated to be about 300M
years old or so.
