| | | | | I fianlly started construction on my walled city. I started on the gate
house, and the front wall. I was building in gray. Very early in the
building process, it became painfully obvious that I just don't have enough
gray... As I was sitting there contemplating my situation, I looked over at
the dirt yellow caslte I recieved in a trade. I started to clean it...
Once it was clean, I rebuilt it. I must say I really like this castle. I
think the yellow really works. Now that could be my nostalgia talking, or the
fact that I have a ton of yellow, and very little gray!
Here is my vision... I want to create a large gate house with a wall around a
city. The wall and most of the defense structures will be yellow. The
architecture of 375 will influence the construction. I will use some gray for
accent colors, and red for the draw bridge and gates, etc.
I am interested in what others might think. Do you like the Yellow Castle?
Do you think yellow can work on a large scale?

I love the Yellow Castle myself. As far as using Yellow on a large scale I say
why not! I personally have more Gray now than any other color thanks to a
bunch of Gray Service Packs I bought last year.
I think any color done right would look great. Of course Black does not
photograph well so I try and stay away from that but otherwise I think any
color looks right in LEGO mainly because its LEGO. Those colors might not look
right in the real world but this is a LEGO world and Bright colors just seem to
be a part of it.
I have also been working on building my gate and wall for my city. I had not
meant to publish these pictures yet but if you are interested you can see my
gate here. (This is just a directory for unpublished pictures. Oops now my
secret is out!! :-).
http://www.nelug.org/members/kingsley/temp/
I have not published this yet because I still expect this to change. There are
a few aspects of the gate that I am considering changing (Or purchasing some
LEGO so I can change them mostly for color purposes). I don't know how this
would look in Yellow but I also would love to see a different Gate/Wall done in
Yellow because it intrigues me now that you have mentioned it.

Just out of curiosity, how many gray packs did you buy?

Thanks kinda what I was thinking, too. This will be a peacefull, "good" city,
so I think the bright, cheery yellow will work. I will prolly use black and
blue in my evil fortress. Very far down the road for now...

Very nice! Looks imposing, and strong! I really like the thin band of red in
the wall. Nice touch.
The concept for mine is very similar, but I envision more towers and spires in
mine. My city will be at the top of it's prosperity, and be overconfident in
it's safety. Little do they know that the evil the ravaged the world not so
long ago is rekindling...

Hopefully I can get enough done in the next week or so to get some pics up!

I bought around 50 of the service packs last year. Which is 700 2x4 bricks
alone. Unfortunately there are not as many 1xX bricks in the packs so I am
running low on 1xX's now. I still have a lot of 2xX's though so my limiting
factor for the Castle wall at the moment are the Gray Slope's and inparticular
the inside and outside gray slope's.

That's what I was going for. I plan on using that band of red in my story line
although I am not exactly sure how yet although I am thinking of calling it the
"Blood line".

Your idea's sound great. I can't wait to see some pictures and watch your
story progress.
I think we sould rename this the "Eric Thread" only Eric's allowed :-).

Wow! That's a lot of gray. I have to believe that out of the 7 1200 piece
tubs I have, I should be able to come up with plenty of yellow for the time
being. I also plan on trading a lot of the bulk colors I don't need no for
more yellow.

Yellow works. I did most of a cathedral in it. Even at that, I still ran out
quickly. I don't have nearly enough of any given color to build a structure in
the proper color scheme. I've resorted to using other colors as supports that
no one will ever see.

Awright, Jeff Stembel, are you out there? Looks liek the Eri[ck]s are
getting uppity again. Let's get our troops together and start some good
old fashioned burning and pillaging!
I think the only question to be answered is one of fashion...should we
wear horned helmets or just strip down and paint ourselves blue? My
various Celtic ancestors are no doubt lobbying for the second but it might
not be a pretty sight...besides, woad is hard to get these days...

I agree this intrusion into the "Eric" thread will not be tollerated. We must
unite as one whether it is spelt Eric, Erik, Erick, Erich, Erric, or Erict (1).
Join with us to banish the Jeff's and Bruce's from this thread.

(1) I have seen all of these through the years and I am sure there are more.
The first 4 I know are valid ethnic spellings of Eri[c,k,ck,ch] but I don't
know where the other 2 come from but I have seen them on NFL football players.
The first is Erric Peagram(sp) and the other is Erict Rhett both are/were
running backs.

Goodness, I'm going to have to write a new regular expression to recognize the
name. Let's see.... Eri((c[kh])|[ck]).(1) That works out to "Eri" followed by
either c followed by k or h, OR, c or k. Thus Erick, Erich, Eric, or Erik are
valid. Anything else strikes me as being some sort of delusional American
aberration (As I dislike this practice of my fellow Americans, I will
blissfully ignore the other forms).(2) Of course, Eri((c[kh])|[ck]) is a big
mouthful, whereas Eri[ck] is nice 'n friendly. I say we stick with the simple
version and leave it at that. See the footnotes for further Perl fun.
Eric "the" Lind
(1)<geek speak>This is all Perl. I think one of the sets of () might be
extraneous, but otherwise, it should work. The c[kh] has to be first in the
alternation, or the [ck] would match successfully and the extra letters
wouldn't get lumped in.</geek speak>
(2)<geek speak>To include the other forms, we'd need Err?i((c[kht])|[ckq]).
This allows Erick, Erich, Eric, Erik, Erric, Erict and Eriq, but also includes
stuff like Erriq and Errich. ewww. A truly accurate form could be
\bEr((i((c[kht])|[ckq]))|ric)\b (3). This, of course, is incredibly
ugly.</geek speak>
(3)Yes, I tested this. The \b are word boundaries to remove things like
Ericsson from the mix.

Cool! That'll remove everyone named Aric, Ric, Ricky, Eirik, Erek, Errick,
Rick, or Rikky from your ranks! This is, of course, assuming you removed all
the Frederick's (and all variations) and Roderick's (and all variations) from

Ricky?! You might as well be named Jeff as Ricky! Besides, how many Eiriks,
Ereks or Arics have you _ever_ seen on Lugnet? Still, one wouldn't want to
eliminate any that might wander in in the future. And I wasn't really trying
to exclude any Eric-variants, I was just having fun writing Perl ;-) For

Extraneous verbiage snipped! Bet you sissy erics have to wear bearskins or

Umm... My Norwegian and German Ancestors are voting for the horned helm, if it
is the classic mythic Viking helm. :)

That's it! I've had enough, it's time myself and my legions entered the
battle! No wait, I'm the only Karl, there may be other spellings, but not with
a K. You should still be afraid, cause I'm armed with a dead fish, and I'm
naked and covered in purple pokadots!

Sure! It's being dotty from being pokedalot (in this case, by a dead fish), as
opposed to being dotty from being polkadalot.

And now for something completely different.
Eric "the" Lind (1)
(1)Ok, I'm not completely different, but I am different, in a complete sort of
way.

Would that be the 5 message argument, or the full thread?

I never wanted to be in such a shambledy thread anyway... I always wanted to
be ... a LEGO builder! Leaping from brick to brick! The mighty 2x4, the BURP!
with my best friends by my side! We'd sing, sing, sing!

Choir:

I build some stuff, collect some sets, and ride around my trains.
On Wednesdays I go shopping, play with Mindstorms to train my brains.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Hello fellow Eri[ck]s of YellowCastle!
I too will always be a yellow castle fan. Though Eric K has made grey look
good.
My 4th century villa in Gaul is inspired by yellow castle. With red roofs.
Populated by yellow castle era types.
Plug: http://www.inch.com/~olsone/villa/villa.html
It's got rather more fortifications and armed sentries than a villa should,
but, I pretend that the owners KNOW that Gaul is going to be overrun one day
soon by Germans eager to cross the Rhine.

That looks really nice! I like the sloped bottom, and the 'blood line' gives
me the shivers... (the kind that makes you wanna hear more :)
I'm going to buy a few grey packs myself, but right now I wasted a large
portion of my lego money in my visit to the Lego Imagination Center in
Downtown Disney. I found some really nice things there... (a full report will
come soon). The grey packs are the only way to get masses of gray bricks,
right? Too bad they don't show up in the 1200 pcs. tub... :-(

Yeah, that'd be interesting.
I'm trying a blue castle and I discovered two things:
a. Castle walls don't mix well with blue.
b. I don't have enough bricks.

Yes, that red line was inspired. It's the kind of touch that lends a martial
aspect, by invoking the sacrifice of those who have defended the city in times
gone by.
And I loved the sloped bottom as well--your wall looks formidable and
threatening, strong and lasting. Very well done.

Well, if you have bunches of tan you could maybe subscribe to the drab
jambalaya box and make some trades. *shrug*

I'm contemplating a city of evil, blood stained iron walls plated in gold. I've
got a temple done already, but I'll make sure I do a gate too, and take some
pictures. Be a while, though, still collecting up the yellow for it.

*grin*
Well, I think it's all about having a color pattern. If you're mixing blue
here, grey there, I agree it doesn't look too good. But for the sake of
argument, I took four 1x5x6 dark grey wall sections and four 3x3x6 dark grey
tower corners and joined them into a tower, half blue and half red. Along the
top, I added another row of bricks of the appropriate colors. The spaced out
blue/red along the bottom looked out of place, but the additional solid layer
of bricks along the top made the top 1x2s not look so out of place. I found
that while a little band of red is fine, too much clashes badly. Since blue is
a cool (as in color temperature) color, it goes better with the dark grey.

I agree. Excellent job, Eric. The slopes indicate strong foundations...

<grin> If I had bunches of tan (which I don't) I'd keep them. At least you can
get grey in service packs if you need to. Not tan...

Right... that's exactly what I did, it didn't look good <grins> <thinks about

What? I don't really understand the 'half blue and half red' part... Do you
mean you joined them using blue and red pieces?

I think yellow is awesome for a castle. White is great too! While grey might
be more accurate, there's a certain "brightness" lent to a fortress filled
with smiling minifigs. It's also just the right color to really get people's
attention, perhaps catching them off-guard.
