The beta update of L3PAO to go along with Lars’ L3P 1.4 beta is now available.

The .zip contains two files. Replace your existing versions with both of the files in the archive.

There may be issues with certain activeX controls not being installed on your system, so keep a backup of your old L3PAO just in case. I’ll put together a complete install once a bit more testing has been done, I wanted to get this out for people to play with.

Note that your old .l3a scene files will no longer work with this version. Up until now, I had been adapting each release’s save/load routine to maintain backwards compatibility with all previous versions, but the function was getting messy so I decided to reformat the save file structure. If anyone has a desperate need to get their old .l3a files ported into the new version I might write an import routine, but I don’t get the feeling that too many people have extensive .l3a file libraries.

I believe I’ve addressed every one of Lars’ new options and attempted to handle all of the interdependencies between them but I’m sure there is lots of tweaking to be done.

The “default.l3a” that is included in this .zip is the default program state settings which are loaded on startup and are in the new file format. Feel free to make all the program selections as you’d like them, then save the scene file over “default.l3a” to set your personal startup state.

You can grab the beta here: L3PAO 1.9 beta

Jeff,

many thx for the quick update. Launching the prog it asks for the location of
LEdit.exe. Since the new LDraw CA library comes without any components of LDraw
0.27 if not the original parts it is unlikely that newbies (who just download
the current package) will have a chance to run L3PAO.

Would it be possible to search for Parts.lst instead or just the "Parts" and "P"
folder (or does L3PAO need LEdit to actually run)?

... snipped ..

I’d like to try this but I get a message about a missing file SYSINFO.OCX which appears to be one of the ActiveX controls you noted might be a problem. Is there an easy solution?

Thanks,

Mike

There may be issues with certain activeX controls not being installed on your system, so keep a backup of your old L3PAO just in case.

On my Vista laptop an old version L3PAO (1.4.0.2) gives me this message: “Component ‘COMDLG32.OCX’ or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid”

... snipped ..

I’d like to try this but I get a message about a missing file SYSINFO.OCX which appears to be one of the ActiveX controls you noted might be a problem. Is there an easy solution?

I get the same message as Mike using the new beta version: “Component ‘SYSINFO.OCX’ or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid”

This seems to be a Vista problem, because L3PAO (at least the old version) works fine my XP PC. I did’t try the new beta version on XP yet.

I am running Win XP SP3 under VMware (which shouldn’t make any difference) so it happens under XP too.

OK. Pitty. I will have to install the old version on my XP machine then.

There are actually two .ocx files missing.  These are components that would be
included in an installation / setup.

I have zipped them and put them here for anyone to download:
http://www.scottwardlaw.com/LEGO/L3PAO_ocx.zip

Just place them in your system32 directory and restart your machine.

It looks like you have put a lot of work into updating L3PAO!

If you don't mind, I'd like to request the follow defaults be changed:

check / mark Render Upon Completion
automatically populate the Output Filename text box
change output image size to 800 by 600
uncheck / unmark Use LGEO Library
make default background color white instead of black

Alternatively, it would be even better if L3PAO could remember each setting upon
closing the program.

I have 6 years VB experience and I would love to contribute to this great
program.

Again, thanks a bunch for the update.  I use L3PAO quite a bit.

Thanks,
Scott W.

Add force decimal separator to be = '.' as in LDraw, even when national system
settings says ',', like for example here in Sweden. The option "-sw0,5"
generates error, of course.

problem with the LEdit.exe:

Since "ledit.exe" is the same size string as "parts.lst" perhaps someone could
try editing the L3PAO executable in a binary editor and replace the string
so it looks for a file that still exists in the current ldraw distribution.

If that's all that's needed, wouldn't it be easier to just create a file
called "ledit.exe" in the appropriate folder - no binary hacking needed.

I think I used a copy of Notepad.exe and renamed it to ledit.exe if my memory
serves me right.

As much as I hate the thought of "stealing" somebody else's idea, I am very much
tempted to make my own frontend GUI to L3P. (I already copied the "Digest" into
LDA.) There are too many problems with L3PAO, and if we can't contact Jeff, I'm
afraid we simply need to make a new one. How do you all feel about that?

Go ahead! I'm not going to include L3P into the AIOI as long as there is no user
friendly GUI that lowers the entrance bar for novice users.

At some point all programs need to be updated to keep up with world evolution...
if the original author can't or doesn't want to do so, then it's normal that
someone steps in!

Thanks for the support. I've been thinking some about this new project, also
about Willy mentioned user friendliness. The fact that L3PAO has developed from
one single page to four tags when introducing the new features in L3P 1.4 Beta,
is in itself highering the entrance bar mentioned. Not counting all the
technical issues mentioned in this thread...

Currently my plans are to initially launch a Basic version for novice users with
not all advanced features included. And then, either launch an "expert" version,
or, maybe a better idea, to add an advanced settings button into the same
program.

From my needs and preferences, I have an idea of what settings are Basic, but
what do you all think? Here's a list of all options included in L3PAO v1.9.0.
Which ones would you say are essential, if you had to pick the number that gets
into one page?

Hello!

I've got the same problem (missing SYSINFO.OCX) with Win7. Is there a solution
too?
