The constant throttle speed is also mildly important if the contest is
timed instead of counting moves. Note that counting time is actually
more prototypical also. In real life, they don't care how many "moves"
you make. What they care is that you got your job done without delaying
the express train because you piddled around fouling the main. Of course
fewer "moves" probably also translates into quicker action.
I'd also point out that manual turnouts are more prototypical also, at
least for this kind of setup (sure, main line turnouts are probably
controlled by an interlocking tower, but turnouts on an industrial
siding are very likely manually thrown.
One advantage of 12v track for this puzzle is no need to have multiple
power connections since 12v turnouts don't route power.
