Well, it wouldn't be entirely elegant unless you mounted the mechanics under
your substrate, but if you were to gear down the movement so that the white
clutch gear had to exert less torque to overcome the detent, you might have it.
The added bonus then would be a slow-motion machine - something that hardcore
model railroaders pay a premium for. Not only is the slow action prototypical
but it reduces both wear and the chance of "rebound" where the diverging point
of the turnout can bounce away from the stock rail if moved at high velocity,
thus increasing the chance of derailment.
I don't know how far down the gearing would have to be reduced, as I've not
tried it (I don't even have a clutch gear), but I thought I'd chuck in my two
cents anyway.

| Hi All, Currently I am attempting to build an automated hump yard. The main problem I'm tackling is the RCX controlled motorized points. I've spent 7 hours over the last two days trying to build a motorized switch track that will run forever with (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.robotics)
