My alltime favorite is the 7740
http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=7740 Coupled with the 7815 sleeper
car and the 7819 mail van this is a very nice train. The reason why I like
this set so much is probably because when the grey track was introduced this
was the high-end train I would drool over as a kid. Compared to my 725
locomotive this was a huge step forward. Maybe it's the nostalgic feeling
about this train that I like so much...
I have made a LDrawmodel of it, view the raytraced version here:

Too bad it's hard to find and very expensive :-( (two years back got one
from someone dumping his entire collection and had no idea what it would
cost, later when someone online offered me one, I think I offended him by my
low $ offer. Now I'm a bit better informed...).
As for 9V trains I like the 4551
http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=4551-1 the most...

| Greetings: I realize this is a simplistic question but what is your favorite Lego Train set? I am mostly a Lego Castle and Pirate collector but I was looking to get into Lego Trains. I have noticed a few train sets that look good but I was not sure. (...) (25 years ago, 5-Feb-00, to lugnet.trains)
