Wouldn't line-of-sight be a problem for trains? I don't know much about
Mindstorms infrared sensors specifically, but besides needing an
omni-directional infrared sensor on the engine, you'd need to deal with the
train going behind structures, through tunnels, etc. DCC solves all of that
nicely.
Maybe radio transmission?

| you'd need to deal with the (...) etc. Only if you want the train to stop in the tunnel. IR (can) have good propagation, my IR remote for my stereo works fine bounced off the wall, but it has to be pointed in somewhat the right direction (1 bounce (...) (25 years ago, 22-Jan-00, to lugnet.trains)
