Theoretically you need it only to change a setting... so just make sure
that all your potential crashes happen in front of you! :-)

I don't know much about
Mindstorms infrared sensors specifically, but besides needing an
omni-directional infrared sensor on the engine, you'd need to deal with the
train going behind structures, through tunnels, etc.  DCC solves all of that
nicely.
