if you see the cross section (upper left),yes, the two halves are linked
togther but not to the wagon, but they can't move crosswise because the 1x
plates in their bottom (blue) are put against the studs of the wagon frame
(red),so they have no degree of freedom.

Ah, I get it now.  Very subtle.
By the way, I can now do 1/10 stud offsets!  It's a bit small to look any
good, but it's possible.  You use a 2x1 plate with centre stud.  That sets
you 1/2 a stud, or 5/10, back from the normal row of studs.  Then you fit a
technic twin-hole brick on that with a plate pushed into the side, which is
2/5 (or 4/10) of a stud out.  So, 5/10 - 4/10 = 1/10.  Then, use short pins
in the side of another technic twin-hole brick, or a 2x1 hinge brick, to
attach  your wall to the plate.  This might be hard to fit in 6-wide though.

Yargh!! You beat me to it! After the 1/5 stud offset thread, I prototyped some 1/10 stud ideas in MLCAD half the day on Tuesday and then with bricks that night. But I was offline yesterday and just came in today. I still don't have a finished (...) (23 years ago, 5-Jul-01, to lugnet.trains)
