I have an idea that uses 1x1 bricks, 1x3 plates and 1x8 tiles. Very simple
for straight runs, 1x3 elbow plates do corners. 1x1 plates for top caps or
and decor you like. I have a picture of the idea at...

Hey! I like that. Not really what I'm looking for, but nice and simple. Kind
of reminds me of the fence that we had around the yard when I was growing up
on the ranch.
Good job.

Speaking of ranch fencing (and not really what you're looking for), I've been
very pleased with the split rail fencing that I slapped together for a show.
It's instantly recognizable, appropriately scaled, extremely versatile, and
very simple. And it only requires 1x8 black plates (and a few 1x2s). It can be
built any length, and can be stretched or shaped (accordian-style) to fit the
need.

It's basically a zig zag design. Now that I think about it, hard to describe.
Simple to show. Take a look:

Basically, just take 1x8 plates and interleave them at the second stud in. Use
1x2s on the ends to finish it. From the top:

\  /            A
X
   \
    \            B
     \
      \  /
X                    (where each slash and each X represent a stud)
      /  \
     /           C
    /
\  /
X
/  \             D

Put down a 1x2 at A, and a 1x8 at C, then a 1x8 on top at B, and a 1x2 at D.
Continue until you have three or four rails. Looks great!

For the record, a 3-rail fence is adequate to keep in livestock, so if you want
to show off how rich you are, use a 4-rail fence (true!).
