| | | This could just be something to do with the sets I have, but I noticed that many sets before 1995 seem to have really stiff and strong pieces. I don't think there's significant difference in friction between "slotted" and "un-slotted" black pins, but they do (both kinds) allow some rotation, just not as much as the grey (...) I've actually started (gulp!) distorting those loose 8t gears by resting them on a couple of teth & squeezing - you've gotta becareful no to squeeze too much!
