Thanks for the information everyone. I just brought this back up since I
recently acquired a rather old model (sealed/MISB 8865 Auto Chassis) and
noticed that some of the pieces were extremely tough to put together,
particulary the half-bushing/axle and the beam/friction peg connections.
These things, especially the bushings, took a good bit of strength to drop
into the appropriate position. On closer examination and comparison of these
and the newer elements it seems that the newer friction pins have two narrow
opening down the middle of the part, while the older ones do not. The
half-bushings seem to have a full cross-axle insert and therefore fit more
snugly around the axles than do the ones after 1994 (which had a larger
opening), although the ones that came with 8880 Super Car in 1994 (which had
the smaller holes) were not neraly as stiff and tight as the 8865 ones. I
guess this has both advantages and disadvantages; the pieces are much
tougher to snap into place, but they also stay on much more tightly...

what I've noticed is the black friction pins - many models I've bought already
built I've found it extremely hard to remove these, requiring me to push with
an axle very hard. A couple I haven't been able to remove at all - I had to
drill them out. And it seems to affect the "Slotted" pins as well as the older
un-slotted ones.

The grey pins seem to be slightly "looser" and I rarely have any problem with
them.

After trying to use the old ones and getting frustrated trying to modify an existing construction that used them, I sorted all my friction pegs into new and old ones, and put the (...)
