From my own perspective, it is basically due to having an interest in how things work
and/or making things work, a geek philosophy if you like. From this, making lego models
and doing a PhD in a technical subject seem pretty consistent with each other. Getting
yourself a lego bribe is easy - just buy one, with the notion that if it helps you get
the PhD it's an investment in your future which will pay back at least tenfold, and try
your utmost not to build it :-)
