I read this article recently, although an immediate disadvantage that
springs to mind is that if you want to move the cylinder quickly you
won't be able to anymore. Another article (perhaps by the same author?)
suggested that a good improvement would be to make the onset of air
pressure more gradual in the switches so that fine and course control is
easier. Sounds like a good idea to me, although with extreme care and
practice good control is possible with the switches as they are. Putting
the gear levers (as in 8462) onto the pneumatic switches makes this much
easier. I suppose an even bigger lever would be possible with an axle
joiner and axle.
