The un-geared motors are worse, because your speed reduction train will inevitably have much more friction than the reduction box Lego put in the geared motors. I ended up also (...) Here is my idea you need: (per ski) a bionicle foot piece 2 #3 axles 1 #2 axle 2 half bushings 1 full width beam (6l or 7l works best, or you could use 2 half beams) and one of the new 1 bend angle beams used in e.g. the battle droid.
