I dunno-- I'm almost tempted to say that Star Trek could've hurt the sci-fi
market for SW had it been first.

First off, effects. One of the HUGE things SW did was the great effects.
Chances are ST would've had the same cheezy effects that everyone had back
then, since it was only because Lucas was low-budget that he actually went
with the effects team that he did-- He was just lucky they had good
innovative ideas.

2nd, ST wasn't fresh and new. ST characters and story-genre had already been
established by the show. ST fans would've gone, but people who didn't like
the show (and as you say it had been cancelled, so its fan base may have
indeed been waning) probably wouldn't have bothered.

3rd, the SW genre was just plain new for sci-fi. Sci-fi on a mythic scale
just wasn't really done... Jedi Knights with swords in the same movie with
space ships? Hadn't really been done before.

4th, plain luck with the actors (except Mark Hammil). Harrison Ford & Alec
Guiness really did a show-stealing job, and very good other efforts from
James Earl Jones, Carrie Fisher (another character you didn't see often-- a
"beat 'em up" princess? A rarity back then), Anthony Daniels, and
whatsisname-- Grand Moff Tarkin. ST just didn't really have the same acting
talent IMHO until TNG.

Anyway, I'd guess if ST had come first, it wouldn't have done nearly as well
as it did, and probably would've been a guage for Fox on whether or not to
do SW at all.

(...) I believe that most sci-fi after Star Wars used Lucases own special effects production company, ILM, to do the effects in their movies. Before this, most studios did cheesy effects 'in house' (2001 being a noteable exception, those were pretty (...) (22 years ago, 11-Apr-02, to lugnet.starwars)
