    Idea Crunching —Leonard Hoffman
Okay, Paul Baulch has a well documented distaste of the use of wheels as engines. And at first I thought he was crazy, but then, the more I hear his words in my head, the more I think he's right. They are somewhat un-LEGO-y, not to mention easy and (...) (20 years ago, 6-Dec-04, to lugnet.space, FTX) !

        Re: Idea Crunching —Gil Shaw
(...) Interesting topic. I've always felt the same about wheels as engines. I've only seen them used a few times really well. Chris Giddens seems to be able to weild them (URL) decently> in a PCS manner, mostly because they are often countersunk (...) (20 years ago, 6-Dec-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

        Re: Idea Crunching —Daniel Rubin
(...) There's always the equally trite barrels! ;) I've used barrels and wheels myself before, but have been trying to move away from that. I've tried some things using large dishes built into stuff, and with central protrubrances, and no trans (...) (20 years ago, 6-Dec-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

        Re: Idea Crunching —Travis Matheson
(...) I personally have used Lego wheels (LoM) as a fighter engine once, and in that case I thought the Wheels worked excellently as an engine. Having said that though I agree with Paul and now you Lenny that they are over used. (...) Pods. Gil's (...) (20 years ago, 6-Dec-04, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Idea Crunching —David Eaton
(...) I'm not sure about making it look better or worse (might be worse than wheels), but how about Bionicle canister tops? I know they've been meshed with regular Lego by several people, dunno if I've ever seen 'em used as engines, though. Plus (...) (20 years ago, 6-Dec-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

        Re: Idea Crunching —Tom McDonald
(...) Often yes. But at the same time, don't let somebody else's idea root itself needlessly. And it doesn't sound like you've done that, but at least consider whether it's your style or not, and why. When a wheel is the perfect part, regardless of (...)         Re: Idea Crunching —Paul Baulch
(...) I thought I only said that once. And in haste, which I sort of regretted at the time. They can look OK, I guess my main beef with them is that they're a big cop-out on the modelling challenge side of things. I mean, many of us amass a large (...)         Re: Idea Crunching —Stefan Garcia
*pops out of the blue that is my laziness* One thing I've always had trouble with is getting a large enough nozzle for the engine. I use "fusion engines" with my stuff, but I can never seem to get that "tunnel into the darkness" and "there's a big (...) (20 years ago, 9-Dec-04, to lugnet.space)

        Re: Idea Crunching —Kyle Vrieze
(...) I use wheels for engines all the time, so maybe I'm a little defensive, but I agree with Gil that they work better when they are countersunk into a housing. I think the wheel-engine on the Quasar was less than satisfying because it stuck out (...) (20 years ago, 10-Dec-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Idea Crunching: Engines —Kevin Blocksidge
(...) I've compiled a folder of engine pictures, including those mentioned in this thread. (URL) Engine Inspiratation> If you know of a good addition, email me. ~Kevoh (20 years ago, 11-Dec-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

        Re: Idea Crunching —Kenn Oldham
(...) I use wheels quite often for engines, but usually mix them in with other cylinder-like pieces. I'm also quite proud of some of my housings around the engines, particularly with boat hulls, as in here: (URL) and here: (URL) second has another (...)         Re: Idea Crunching —Peter Roberts
(...) I had a design with directional flaps once. This meant that theoretically, one engine could be use for all sorts of directions, or that was the idea. Unfortunately, I made it shortly after the civilian MOC contest, and I've scrapped it (...) (20 years ago, 16-Dec-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

        Re: Idea Crunching —David Eaton
(...) I always figured it was because they didn't have "real" momentum to begin with. I figured hyperspace was sort of "bending space" similar to "warp drive" in Star Trek. So coming out of hyperspace probably puts you at a dead-stop. Or whatever (...) (20 years ago, 16-Dec-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)
