So I was hoping to mine the forum for some ideas on how to achieve cool engines without resorting to space wheels, specifically in relation to building large ships and shuttles (not dinky fighters ;) ).

I had one good idea with the Kushinata, but the result didn’t look 100% engine to me, so I added the transorange bit and then it ended up looking more like a giant Bot head.

So, anyone have any cool ideas and/or thoughts on this dilema?

I use wheels for engines all the time, so maybe I’m a little defensive, but I agree with Gil that they work better when they are countersunk into a housing. I think the wheel-engine on the Quasar was less than satisfying because it stuck out there in front of God and everybody, with nothing to camouflage its wheel-ness. Keith’s Ghoul shows off one of my favorite thruster shots, where the wheels are sunk in big cylinder housings, further contained in a big angled wall housing.

Some good examples of non-wheel engines (in addition to others already in this thread) are Soren’s Lying Bastard and Mladen’s Vanguard. Of course, these are more anime-style ships, the techniques might not work with a retro-future style.
