So I was hoping to mine the forum for some ideas on how to achieve cool engines without resorting to space wheels, specifically in relation to building large ships and shuttles (not dinky fighters ;) ).

I had one good idea with the Kushinata, but the result didn’t look 100% engine to me, so I added the transorange bit and then it ended up looking more like a giant Bot head.

So, anyone have any cool ideas and/or thoughts on this dilema?

There’s always the equally trite barrels! ;) I’ve used barrels and wheels myself before, but have been trying to move away from that. I’ve tried some things using large dishes built into stuff, and with central protrubrances, and no trans bits, but they don’t look too enginey.

I’m trying something different with my current project, which is a large trans plate covered in trans grille tiles, with a light behind it, built into an enginey housing (if I do say so myself). You can see it here. Obviously it’s rather a hideously large project, but I think the idea can be scaled down reasonably. I was inspired in part by Dan Jassim’s explorer. I went with a simple square, but any shape can work, so long as you can build it. I tried something similar with this fighter and would have been happier with it, if I had plates or bricks in the right shape to make the whole back inside bit of the engine trans.

Another interesting idea is to move away from the traditional thruster mentality altogether. Give it pods on the the outside, or some kind of crazy internal reactor, or a solar sail or something else.

Good luck with your next project Lenny.
