Well, use of station tracks in place of 2 short track segments is a
little awkward. Remember, there is no "NOP" setting for them. The train
either stops, or leaves the track section always going the same
direction.
One option which could be investigated to conserve short track sections
is to only build the track into a module which is not easily reachable.
Then, when a setup is put together, connect all the fixed track
sections. That way, two modules which have a track running straight
through can be set up using three sections of long straight track.
