The new gear sizes inspired me so much that I created a huge listing of all
gear ratios that can be created with the gear sizes now available and put it up
on my web site:
http://www.mrob.com/lego/gears.html
(In case you're wondering, this is useful mainly for building clocks that
display the phase of the moon or other astronomical movements)
The table lists over 3000 distinct geartrains with 6 gears or less (there are
actually many more but they differ only in trivial ways) with reduction ratios
between 0.0 and 1.0.
I was pleased to find that it is now possible to get to within 1% of any
desired ratio between 0.5 and 1.0, using 6 gears or less. Of course, by adding
additional 1-to-2 stages you can get just as much accuracy for ratios below
0.5. Ratios above 1.0 are equivalent except you just reverse the order of all
the gears.
