That makes sense. With the two new sizes you end up with five different ratios
that can be constructed with two gears at a 2-stud (16 millimeter) axle
spacing:
8 <-> 24 1:3 ratio
12 <-> 20 1:1.4 ratio
16 <-> 16 1:1 ratio
20 <-> 12 1.4:1 ratio
24 <-> 8 3:1 ratio
and of course
8 <-> 8 <-> 8 1:1 ratio in reverse
although I doubt that's how they actually did the reverse, but it's pretty
clear the forward gears should be done this way. The uniform spacing of the
axles and the fairly small overall size makes it a great way to do a gearshift
transmission.
