I've toyed with the idea myself and it's essentially a CNC plotter
with a nozzle of some kind.  I wanted to see if I could spray/deposit
thin layers of sugar (or marzipan!) the build up custom 3D  edible candy
figures.  I think it's  the material  you intend to use that dictates
the design of the machine  (as I'm prone to overstating the obvious).
The balsa wood - laser idea sounds great.  A little sanding perhaps when
your done and some stain, wow.  Paper will give you a finer "sample"
rate in the Y value, but your right, getting them to stick could be
interesting.  Perhaps after the pieces are cut, they could be dragged
over an array of glue sticks, or better yet,  have an arm that give the
top of the stack a shot of  spray adhesive before it puts the new layer
down.
I've seen these 3D printers in action at several siggraphs.  They
are amazing to behold.  And yesterday, on slashdot of course, was the
rapid prototyper that prints houses

(...) You can email directly to: lego-robotics@crynwr.com (...) Yes - I had thought about something like that. I was thinking in terms of sheets of thin balsa wood - which could probably be cut with the kind of power I could get from a Lego motor. (...) (20 years ago, 12-Mar-04, to lugnet.robotics)
