I had seen this technique (and noticed this effect myself)
but had heard rumor that this impaired the sensitivity of
the detector. I'm going to try some rigorous tests and see
if I can verify this.

Ah! Thank you very much. That's exactly what I was hoping for!
We almost needa Yahoo-style categorized index of all this great
Lego robotics stuff. Navigation, Light sensors, rotation sensors,
sensor multiplexing, sensor modification, lidar, drive systems,
steering systems, the list goes on and on. Maybe I'll see if I can
throw together some sort of PHP-based SQL database to index some
of these links by the categories they apply to, and then query
by topic. I'm overwhelmed.
