Ralph Hempel had an example of the heat-shrink tubing solution here:

He also tried used some black vinyl from a binder?

To make a passive light sensor, you can use a design like Michael Gasperi's:

It costs only a couple bucks, and works quite well.

If you would like better response from your lego light sensor, you can
use a piece of black shrinkwrap tubing and slip it over the red led.
Make sure that the tubing completely surrounds the side of the led for
best results. Then you can either close off the end of the tubing or
leave it open; either way the sensitivity of the light sensor increases dramatically.
